UPDATE: New details released in fatal Bryan shooting

The Bryan Police Department has released the names of the people involved in the fatal shooting on Stevens Drive.

Alton Currie, 58, Bryan, is charged with murder in the killing of James Zikus. He is also charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly pointing his gun at officers while trying to leave the scene.

BRYAN, Texas — UPDATE: August 25, 2020

The Bryan Police Department has released new information on a fatal shooting that happened Monday evening.

Authorities said 48-year-old James Zikus of Bryan was shot and killed on the 3700 block of Stevens Drive. Alton Currie, 58, also of Bryan, has been arrested and is charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Officers were called to the scene after reports of a shooting around 6 p.m. Monday. They said a man, later identified as Currie, pointed a gun at officers as he tried to drive away from the area. Officers said they were able to arrest him and later found Zikus in the same area suffering from a gunshot wound.

Investigators said they later determined Currie to be responsible for the killing of Zikus. What led up to the shooting has not yet been verified. Currie is currently in the Brazos County Jail on $180,000 bond.

The victim of the shooting was pronounced dead at the scene. One suspect is in custody and the investigation is ongoing. Police say the incident is isolated.
