Grand opening set for Boonville Heritage Park

BRYAN – The Grand Opening Celebration of Phase II expansion of Boonville Heritage Park in conjunction with the 175th anniversary of Brazos County will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16.

The activities are hosted by the William Joel Bryan Chapter #14-Sons of the Republic of Texas and the Brazos County Historical Commission.

The grand opening event will feature remarks by project organizers, local elected officials and tours of the newly expanded Phase II park project. The expansion includes a replica courthouse stationed at Boonville, smokehouse and historic Masonic Lodge.

Phase I, which opened in early 2015, includes the centerpiece of Boonville Heritage Park, which is a 19th Century Turner-Peters log cabin built in 1856 and relocated from land owned by Texas Municipal Power Agency near Carlos in Grimes County.

The park also features a Six Flags over Texas Plaza, period cannon and the interpretive panels for explanation of park history and other information.

To date, more than $650,000 has been given to the park project. Leading project organizers are Mervin Peters and Stephanie Sale. Committee members are Anne Boykin, Henry Mayo, Tom McDonald, George Nelson and Jim Singleton.
