BRYAN, Texas – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers arrested a driver on charges of intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid, after a crash on Thursday in Madison County.
At approximately 6:00 a.m., DPS troopers responded to a one-vehicle crash on Batson Loop. They discovered a white Dodge SUV had rolled over after striking a small ditch. Inside the SUV troopers found a deceased male; he was identified as Marcos Rivera, 44, of Normangee.
Investigators learned from witnesses that Rivera was a passenger and the driver had fled the scene. DPS troopers conducted an investigation and identified the driver as Gilberto Romero, 33, of Normangee.
They determined alcohol was a contributing factor in this crash.
A warrant to arrest Romero on charges of intoxication manslaughter and fail to stop and render aid was obtained by investigators. He was taken into custody by troopers on Thursday morning and placed into the Madison County jail.
Both offenses are second degree felonies. Each is punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and a fine of not more than $10,000.
DPS troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash.
