BRYAN, Texas - The Bryan ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve a voluntary separation with Tommy Wallis Monday and also accepted his resignation. During a regular workshop meeting, the trustees voted 4-2 in favor of the separation.

Wallis, who was not at the meeting, had been the superintendent of the district since 2011 and the board voted to extend his contract until 2019 in March.

The board spent about two hours in closed session before announcing their decision to the public.

KAGS News asked the Dr. Douglas Wunneburger, president of the BISD Board of Trustees, about the reasons behind the board's decision to part ways with Wallis.

"I really can't comment on it, the reasons behind it at this time. What we can say will be on the press release," said Wunneburger.

Wunneburger also said any rumors surrounding the departure of Wallis are pure speculation and had nothing to do with the board's decision.

Here is the release from Bryan ISD:

Citing personal reasons, Dr. Thomas A. Wallis has announced his resignation as Superintendent of

Schools for the Bryan Independent School District. An agreement has been reached which allows

Dr. Wallis the ability to pursue other interests and permits the Board to pursue hiring another

Superintendent. The Board and Dr. Wallis have entered into the Agreement believing it is in their

respective best interests and in the best interests of the District.

The Board of Trustees expresses its appreciation to Dr. Wallis for his efforts while serving as

Superintendent of this great school district and its wonderful students, parents and administrators,

and for the achievements and accomplishments of the entire District team during Dr. Wallis' tenure

as Superintendent.

Dr. Wallis thanks the present and past Board of Trustees for providing him with the opportunity to

serve in the Bryan Independent School District. A school district is measured by the commitment of

the Board, staff and community to its children and their achievement. This District is indeed so

committed. Dr. Wallis would like to express his heartfelt appreciation to the staff and community

for their support of the District's programs and services during his term as Superintendent.

The Board extends its best wishes to Dr. Wallis in his future endeavors, and Dr. Wallis wishes the

District continued success. On its part, the Board will be moving forward to name an Interim

Superintendent so as not to disrupt the District's operations.

The board also voted to approve to name Tim Rocka the interim superintendent effective immediately and released the following statement:

Trustees Name Interim Superintendent

The Bryan ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously tonight to name Deputy Superintendent Tim Rocka to the position of interim superintendent for Bryan ISD.

Rocka, a veteran of 28 years in public education, joined Bryan ISD in 2011 as assistant superintendent of human resources. He was later named deputy superintendent, overseeing human resources, data services, transportation, custodial and maintenance services, fine arts and career/technical education, among others.

Rocka has three adult children, Courtney (25), Colton (19) and Caylee (18). He has been married to Kim Rocka for 26 years.

As the board looks ahead, trustees will spend the upcoming weeks and months identifying a process to determine the district’s next superintendent.
