TX Dot aims to make roads safer for active transportation

TX Dot met on Monday night to get the public's input on making roads safer and more accessible for those who bike or walk around town.

COLLEGE STATION - TX Dot is leading efforts on a safer solution around the Brazos Valley.

For those who walk or use bikes to get around town, TX Dot met on Monday night to get the public's input on making roads safer and more accessible.

Clayton Niemietz, a cyclist in the area, says the meeting is well planned and can serve a purpose.

"It is great that the community is coming together to promote safety for cyclists and pedestrians," Niemietz said.

While there are some areas that are more accessible and more safe to ride, there are others that aren't. Niemietz said it's "scary" to navigate those places at times.

"People are in a big car, they just fly by," Niemietz said "They have the protection being safe in their cars, but we don't. We are just kinda bare skin and bones."

TX Dot Maury Jacob said everyone's main goal is to provide a safe, comfortable area for those who want to walk or ride their bikes.

"If it is safe, convenient and comfortable, we can get a lot more people on the roads," Jacob said.

One way Jacob mentioned is getting kids to ride to school on their bikes. He said over one-third of morning and afternoon traffic congestion comes from parents taking their children to school.

He gave the idea of "school bussing" with bikes. An idea of parents or an adult riding with the children to and from school to insure safety along the way.

But, the first step are the roads.

"If we can make our community safe, I think everyone gets healthier and happier," Jacob said.
