COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men's basketball program has announced the signing of top-ranked junior college guard Wendell Mitchell.

“Wendell is a versatile guard who has the ability to play on and off the ball,” Texas A&M head coach Billy Kennedy said. “His ability to score and create plays for others makes him tough to defend. He is an excellent defender who brings the experience and maturity from three years of college basketball to our program. We’re looking forward to adding him and his family to Aggieland.”

Mitchell, a 6-foot-3 guard from Rockdale, Texas, played last season at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where he helped lead the Cardinal to a 28-5 record as well as an 18-1 conference mark that clinched the Region XIV Conference Championship. Trinity Valley advanced to NJCAA National Tournament for the fourth time in five seasons, falling to Eastern Florida State in the second round despite a game-high 28 points from Mitchell.

During his lone season in Athens, Mitchell played in all 33 games for the Cardinal and averaged 19.8 points per game during the regular season while shooting 48.9 percent from the field, including a 36.5 percent clip from 3-point range. His scoring average jumped to 22.0 points per contest during Trinity’s three-game run in the postseason.

Mitchell tops the list of the 2018 junior college recruits according to JUCOrecruiting.com as well as checking in at No. 2 in the 247 Sports list of junior college players.

Mitchell initially signed with Baylor out of high school, playing one season for the Bears before transferring from the program. After redshirting his first season in Waco, Mitchell made his collegiate debut during the 2016-17 campaign, playing 25 games for the Bears and averaging 8.8 minutes and 2.9 points per outing.

Prior to attending Baylor, Mitchell was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Sergio Garcia at Rockdale (Texas) High School where he averaged 25.6 points, 4.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 3.6 steals over his 123-game prep career.
