Remember to buckle up Texans. The Texas Department of Transportation's "Click It or Ticket" campaign kicks off Monday, reminding people to wear their seatbelts ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

This year mark's the campaign's 19th anniversary. Since its inception in 2002, the percentage of Texans who wear their seatbelts rose from 76% to 91%.

Unfortunately, 2020 saw an 16% increase in deaths of unbuckled motorists compared to 2019. There were 1,073 deaths in 2020 and 926 deaths in 2019, TXDOT says.

Still, wearing a seatbelt helps reduce the risk of dying in an accident by 45%, TXDOT adds.

So from May 24 to June 6, enforcement efforts will be ramped up to ticket drivers and passengers who aren't wearing their seatbelts, especially at night.

This comes ahead of Memorial Day weekend, which is known to be a time where a lot of people hit the roads.
