Donation program gives girls dream prom dresses for free

HOUSTON - It’s prom season and there are a growing number of programs that donate dresses to high school girls to make their night special. There is one in the Cypress area that has been going strong for nine years and claims to be the biggest and the best of its kind.

The teen center of Bammel Church of Christ on FM 1960 West has been transformed into a boutique run by the Giving Gown Foundation. The program invites any girl, regardless of income, to register online at: http://www.givinggown.org/

The program’s “shopping days” take place Thursday, April 7 through Saturday, April 9th. When each girl arrives she is assigned a “godmother” to help her make her selections.

“I like how they have beautiful dresses and then they feed you and then you get accessories and shoes,” said Ayriela, 17, who was in the program last year to get ready for junior prom. She is back this year as a senior.

“We all know that prom is one of those lifetime moments that you have and to be able to be part of that is really something special,” said Michael Nesbit, President of MW Cleaners.

Giving Gown has a greater mission than glam. They want to make sure teenaged girls know they are beautiful on the inside, not just the outside. On the afternoon when they come out to make their selections, the girls will also attend a self-esteem seminar.

The goal is “just to care for them for the time that we have with them and to just love on them and show them how important that they are and help to boost their self-esteem,” said Heather Edmonds, Co-Director of Giving Gown Foundation.
