Rudder High Schools SkillsUSA Chapters Give Back To Their Community

Rudder High School students are making a difference.

Rudder High School students are making a difference. With a little help from the home improvement store Lowe’s, they’re building outdoor picnic tables for the school’s campus.

This community service project will not only enhance the look of the campus but also allow for students to take their work and leisure time outside of the traditional classroom setting.

It all started when two of the Rudder SkillsUSA chapters, were nationally recognized as “Models of Excellence” for achievement and community involvement.

This distinction is awarded to the top 24 chapters from around the nation and includes a $2,000 grant from program sponsor Lowe’s Companies, Inc.

Students said one of their goals for this community service project was to instill school spirit.

“I’m very excited about this project and I think it gives us a great chance to show our school pride and how much we care about our school.”

Lowe’s has a history of supporting the customers they serve through a variety of community improvement projects and programs geared towards students in grades K-12.

“We are really grateful for Lowe’s coming out and supporting Rudder High School and the SkillsUSA organization,” said Fleming, one of the chapter advisors.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit career and technical organization that teaches leadership and job readiness skills. Their goal is to encourage the youth of today to be leaders in the workforce as well as leaders in the community.

“It was amazing to earn national recognition then to come home from competition and see our local Lowe’s store was also invested in our student’s education.”
