8-Year-Old Boy Saves Little Sister From Alleged Kidnapper

NAVASOTA - An eight-year-old Navasota boy is being called a hero after saving his sister from possibly being kidnapped.

Donavon Mitchell and his four-year-old sister Makayla were playing in their yard Sunday when something happened that the family never thought they'd have to worry about.

"I said no and she got mad, and she said I'll take you somewhere and then that's when we ran in the house," said Donavon, who saved his sister from a potential kidnapper.

Someone was trying to kidnap kids in their usually quiet and safe neighborhood.

"I heard Donavon scream and I thought, well I better get out here and see what's going on, so I put my computer down but before I got to the front door, they were already at the front door telling me what had happened," said Shawn Mitchell, Donavon's mom.

Donavon says the woman drove up to his house, offered he and his sister money and said she'd take them anywhere they wanted, that's when Donavon remembered a very important rule he learned in school.

"To stay away from strangers because you might never know what they can do to you," Donavon said.

Luckily this stranger didn't get ahold of Donavon or his sister thanks to the second grader's quick thinking.

Shawn said, "And when [he] yelled no you can't go with her she's a stranger, he said that's when it scared her and she got back in the car and left... We've never had anything like this happen. When I was younger, we could run anywhere we wanted to and you just can't do that anymore."

So what's Donavon's advice for staying safe?

"Stay calm and run away from strangers," he said.

And as for being called a hero, he says, "It feels great!"

The kidnapping suspect is described as a Hispanic woman who was driving a silver car.
