Local nonprofits to host 1st annual children's book swap

Women United and United Way of the Brazos Valley will be hosting the First Annual Jingle Book Bash the last three Saturdays before Christmas.

This event is a book swap and story time intended to encourage the love of reading and provide access to books during the holiday season.

For many children living in poverty there are not a lot of books laying around the house. However, research shows when children are encouraged to read at home they tend to reach a higher level of education.

Thanks to several local donors there will be a selection of over 700 books available. Donors include: Half Price Books, HEB, BCS Habitat for Humanity, The Children’s Museum, and the Clara B. Mounce Public Library.

The books will be appropriate for a variety of ages ranging from small children to young adults.

“Children will exchange a book of their own with any they select from our table,” said Peggi Goss, VP Community Impact of United Way of the Brazos Valley.

“If they do not have a book to exchange, children will still be provided a book of their choosing from the selection we have available.”

In addition to the book swap there will storybook reading time after the snowfall at the Santa set.

The event will be in the JC Penney court at the Post Oak Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on December 9th, 16th, and 23rd.
