New school zone coming to George Bush Drive in College Station

College Station City Council approved the addition of a school zone on George Bush Drive near A&M.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The College Station City Council approved some new school zones Thursday much to the delight of parents.

A new school zone will be placed along George Bush Drive adjacent to the new Campus View High School and others will be placed around other schools nearby.

Currently, there is no school zone along George Bush Drive and it has some people fearing the worst.

"Basically that a child gets hit. Whether it's mine or someone else's," said Lisa Troy, who was picking up her child.

"They're on the sidewalk and they're by themselves," said Victor Garcia who was picking up a family member. "People, like college kids, don't know how to drive. No offense, but they really don't," he said in reference to students coming from the nearby Texas A&M campus.

The City of College Station says concerns from both parents and the district motivated them to approve the new school zones.

In addition to George Bush Drive, zones will be placed on Bizzell Street, Timber Street, and the zone on Holik Street will be extended.

"I think it'll just remind people to slow down and pay attention. When you see a school zone you know there's going to be children around," said Troy.

The city has ordered the new signals and they will be installed as soon as possible. The zones will go into effect once they are operational.
