Monique Brand - Assistant News Director

A 14-year journalism veteran who grew up in Killeen, Monique is excited to join the TEGNA family and looks forward to sharing news within the BCS community.

BRYAN, Texas — Monique Brand has joined KAGS-TV as their assistant news director. 

Her hire became effective Nov. 14, 2022.

In her role, she leads the news department providing editorial decision making and guidance to ensure compliance and accuracy, and that deadlines are met in a fast-paced environment. 

Brand is known as a ‘hybrid journalist’ with a background in radio, broadcast and print.

Previously before joining KAGS-TV, she was the managing editor of the Lampasas Dispatch Record.

During her 20-month tenure at the Dispatch Record, the editorial team snagged nine out of 12 categories in the 2022 Texas Press Association Awards and garnered two sweepstakes.

Prior to that, Brand was a city hall and crime reporter for a Killeen-based newspaper and several Central Texas television stations.

She has also covered border coverage and county government in Arizona.

The 17-time Associated Press award winner also worked as a reporter in Kerrville, Los Angeles, and Norfolk, Virginia. Among her many awards include Second Place in News Photography, and Third Place in Feature Reporting by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors in 2020.  She also co-won Third Place for Investigative Report of the Year that same year.

She is also an two-time Lone Star Emmy winner.

In 2016, Brand was honored by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Major James Kerr Chapter, for her "service to the community and country." 

The U.S. Navy veteran grew up in Killeen.

Brand studied English Literature at Texas Lutheran University and Navarro College. She also attended Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education program.

She is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 9191. 

Brand currently serves as the chairman of the City Of Killeen Animal Advisory board, vice-chair of the City of Killeen Arts Commission, Sister Cities board member and communications chair for the Innovation Black Chamber of Commerce. 

The assistant news director says she, along with her cat Horen, is happy to join the TEGNA family and looks forward to sharing news within the Bryan-College Station community.
