Fly or Drive: Crunching the airfare costs in the Brazos Valley

Don't let rising gas prices keep you from getting away this summer.

BRYAN, Texas —

Imagine you've been planning to head to Disney with the family for months, or you are planning for that long overdue girls trip to Las Vegas. However, you want to find more ways to get more bang for your buck.

With March flight prices off the charts flying out of College Station, some prices starting at $734 just for a roundtrip. In addition to having to get a connecting flight in Dallas.

With gas prices impacting the costs of flights, it's rerouted many travelers.

For most people, they prefer to hop in their car and take that drive to save some money. Ebony Watson lives in Bryan, who travels often and took a 13 hour road trip to Tennessee from Houston. She save almost $200 in gas compared to flying, which is why she believes driving is best.

"It was cheaper to drive to Tennessee than taking time to pack and to fly," she said.

Now, let's say you decide to hit the road from Houston, you'll actually save around $250 choosing that route, even with the increase in price of fuel.

"It could influence more people to drive especially airfare and there's limited capacity on flights, not only that but I think a lot of Americans especially families will find it a lot cheaper in those short and near distant places instead of flying," Patrick De Haan, Gas Buddy Petroleum Analyst said.

When it comes to flying, there’s a lot more to it than just the price of a plane ticket. From region to region, flying from Houston to Las Vegas you'll pay at least $350 and a max of $750 for a roundtrip flying with Southwest.

However, that's when booking a month out. Changing your flight time to three months out, booking in June the price dropped by $500.

Keeping the same three months range, airfare from Houston to Orlando will range from $220 to $565, per person.

Now, switching gears from Southwest airlines to Spirit, a low cost airline the added fees for baggage will have you paying close to the same price for flying with Southwest. The difference, Southwest allows you two free bags with their airline.

So, if you're going to fly, travel experts say it's best to book two to three months out for a lower price.

Also, choosing to view the low fare calender will show you why booking three motnhs out will save you money on that girls trip …

When it comes to driving, you may want to consider a staycation. Thankfully, there are a lot of places the Brazos Valley can offer up a good time for people of all ages.

You can plan a day trip to Galveston and tour the many different historical exhibits, walk along the beach and collect shells, or eat at one of the many famous restaurants along the bay.

While in Southeast Texas, plan a trip to the Houston Space Center. You could also stay within the Brazos Valley and check out the historical downtown of Navasota and shop in one of the many shops.
