City of College Station to hold Citizens University

The 2020 program starts on January 27th for Brazos County locals who want to get to know their city officials and the way their government works.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The City of College Station is gearing up to hold their Citizens University beginning on January 27, 2020.

College Station holds the free, 13-week-long program on Mondays from 7-9 p.m. for citizens who want to get to know their local government on a deeper level.

Participants must be at least 18 years old, a resident of Brazos County and not running for political office during the program.

According to the city, the classes are free and those involved "will get to talk to those who build budgets, construct capital projects, plan for growth, keep the lights on and neighborhoods safe."

From meeting local city officials, getting to see what local law enforcement agencies go through, to even figuring out how rezoning works, it is hands on and for everyone.

Students stand to benefit by getting better acquainted with their city by learning about different local government programs and building their own personal resume.

“If you’re interested in long term living here if you're interested in a career in the city of college station, if you’re a business owner if you're a real estate agent, I think you’ll learn a lot,” said Lacy Lively, the city of College Station's Marketing Manager.

Whoever decides to sign up the city just hopes that the course sparks curiosity about their area.

“We want you to ask your questions. And we want you to be involved when you leave these programs so, I think it’s pretty special that we have these opportunities,” Lively said.

There are just a few spots left, and if you are interested in applying, you can visit the city's website.
