'It pays to be Texan' | H-E-B launches debit card to earn cash back on groceries

The card gives customers 5% cash back on qualifying H-E-B products.

AUSTIN, Texas — H-E-B remains committed to making its slogan – "Here, Everything's Better" – ring true. The Texas grocery store chain has announced a new debit card that allows customers to earn cash back on purchases of certain H-E-B-branded products.

At the end of August, H-E-B announced its new Debit Account program, which allows 5% cash back on qualifying H-E-B products, among other benefits. 

H-E-B said its debit card can be used anywhere Mastercard is typically accepted and it offers an optional high-yield savings accounts for users, free cash withdrawals from H-E-B branded ATMs, no monthly fees to maintain an account and receiving paychecks two days earlier with direct deposit.

The cash back offer must be used within the H-E-B brand of products, which include the following names:

  • H-E-B name brand
  • Hill Country Fare
  • Meal Simple
  • Field & Future by H-E-B
  • Home by H-E-B
  • Kodi
  • Cocinaware
  • H-E-B Kitchen & Table
  • GTC 

Additionally, cash back is only available on purchases made directly in-store and for purchases made for curbside or home delivery orders through H-E-B's website.

"At H-E-B, we're always looking to provide Texans more ways to save," said Ashwin Nathan, H-E-B group vice president of marketing. “With the H-E-B debit card, customers can have a more rewarding shopping experience that allows them to keep more money in their pockets while enjoying valuable benefits and perks.”

To add funds to grocery-specific debit card, customers need to either link another debit card, add a bank account, deposit cash to the account or enroll the debit card in direct deposit from their employer. In addition to receiving paychecks two days earlier, customers can also receive their tax returns, Social Security and other government payments to the new card.

Once funds have been added to their card, customers can view their remaining balance through the H-E-B Debit mobile app. Users may also check their transaction history and manage account-related alerts.
