Bryan PD hosts Junior Police Academy

For two weeks, students going into 10th, 11th and 12th grades get an inside look at local law enforcement, with classes involving canines and bomb squad operations.

BRYAN, Texas — Some local high school students are getting an inside look at what it takes to be a police officer at the Bryan Police Department's Junior Police Academy.

For two weeks, students going into 10th, 11th and 12th grades get an all-encompassing look at local law enforcement.

"They hear from different divisions throughout our department... and then we also bring in some outside agencies, like right now we have college station police department giving a bomb squad demonstration... later they'll get to see canine..."

Even if the students don't graduate with a desire to be a police officer, Mckethan said, "one of the biggest takeaways is that to learn that police officers are regular people. You know, we're not always just trying to make an arrest, or find someone that did something bad."

Throughout the next several days of the academy, the students will get to participate in even more activities like a mock crime scene and traffic scenarios.

There is no way to sign up for the 2019 academy, as it is in progress, but you can connect with the Bryan Police Department on Facebook or your child's Criminal Justice teacher (if their school has one.)
