Coronavirus updates in Central Texas: Tuesday stats tracker

Here are the latest COVID-19 updates in Central Texas for Tuesday, Aug. 3.

COVID-19 numbers:

  • Texas: More than 2.6 million cases have been reported in the state, and more than 52,100 people in Texas have died, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Central Texas counties: 
    • Austin-Travis County: The seven-day moving average of new admissions is 63, and an average of 366 people are hospitalized. The seven-day moving average for new cases is 397. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 90,727 cases have been reported and at least 901 people have died. 
    • Hays County: There are currently 1,592 active cases and 46 people are currently hospitalized. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 21,175 confirmed cases have been reported and at least 275 people have died. At least 19,308 people have recovered from the virus.
    • Williamson County: There are 348 new cases, and 12% of hospital beds are available. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 44,109 cases have been reported in the county and at least 495 people have died.

Updates:

5:45 p.m. – Hays County reported four more deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday – a man from Buda in his 60s, a man from Dripping Springs in his 90s, a man from Kyle in his 30s and a man from Wimberley in his 70s.

Health officials also reported 209 new confirmed cases along with seven new hospitalizations and five new hospital discharges. There are 38 additional people considered recovered.

4:50 p.m. – Travis County reported 601 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total to 90,727 cases and 901 deaths since the start of the pandemic. At least 86,780 people have recovered from the virus.

Travis County currently has 433 people hospitalized with COVID-19, with 153 in the ICU and 79 on ventilators.

4:20 p.m. – There are 469 COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Austin area, with COVID-19 patients taking up 10.55% of hospital beds. The are 14 staffed ICU beds available, with 1.9% of ICU capacity remaining. Around 22.8% of all ICU patients are COVID-19 patients.

There were 2,101 new confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in the Austin area on Tuesday (Bastrop, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties). The seven-day average of new cases for the four-county metro area is at 796 per day – up 79% from a week ago and up 108% from a month ago.

The seven-day average of COVID-19 hospitalizations is at 63 new patients being admitted per day – a 51% increase from a week ago and a 574% increase from a month ago.

There were 11,774 new confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in Texas on Tuesday, with the seven-day average at 8,405 new cases per day over the past week – up 93% from a week ago and up 903% from a month ago. There are 7,305 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals – the highest since Feb. 20 and up 46% from a week ago and up 341% from a month ago.

There were 51 COVID-19 deaths reported statewide on Tuesday, bringing the total to 52,161 COVID-19 deaths in Texas since the start of the pandemic.

Around 53% of the eligible Texas population is now fully vaccinated.

9:20 a.m.  Austin Public Health said while the area has been in Stage 5 territory for days, the city is still in Stage 4. Leaders are considering new guidance that will be released in the coming days.

7 a.m. – Austin ISD is hosting a vaccine clinic on Saturday, Aug. 7, at the AISD Performing Arts Center off Barbara Jordan Boulevard in Mueller. The clinic starts at 9 a.m.

The district says masks are required at the clinic, and a parent or guardian must be present in order for a child to receive a vaccine.
