How to 'hack anxiety' as businesses start to re-open in COVID-19 pandemic

After a month and a half of quarantine, some people may feel uneasy as the public attempts to return to normalcy.

BRYAN, Texas — Shelter-in-place orders in Texas are being lifted this week and the state is starting to slowly open its economy again. After a month and a half of quarantine, some people may feel uneasy as the public attempts to return to normalcy.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, only about 37% of those suffering from anxiety in the United States receive treatment.

This may be because some people do not understand that what they’re going through are symptoms of anxiety.

“This is where you start feeling physical sensations. That’s why people who suffer anxiety, it’s very scary because you feel very real symptoms, chest palpitations, sweats, extreme panic, lost movement in hands and feet, start getting dizzy, vertigo, confusion, slurred speech and stuff like that,” said Anxiety Hacker owner Kolton Krottinger.

Kolton Krottinger started his company Anxiety Hacker based off of his own experience with the disorder to help others in the same shoes.

Through online support groups, Krottinger oversees nearly 50 thousand people to provide them a safe space and resources for dealing with anxiety.

“Diversion tactics are the biggest things that help most people with anxiety. If you find yourself focusing on anxiety, diversion tactics are very important. This is where you can find yourself, find your happy place," said Krottinger.

He added that it is a constant mental battle to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“One thing we do is we map out the things we can change and the things we cannot change. We place a major focus on the things we can change. Don’t waste any energy on things we can't," said Krottinger.

He says this pandemic creates opportunities for people to use their own experience and stories to help others who may be going through similar struggles.

Kolton and his company are giving out free anxiety planners to anyone who may need one.
