Hundreds attend memorial service for Dallas officer Michael Smith

A public memorial service was held at noon Thursday for slain Dallas Police officer Michael Smith.

A public memorial service was held at noon Thursday for slain Dallas Police officer Michael Smith.

Sgt. Smith, 55, was one of five officers gunned down in an ambush on law enforcement a week ago in downtown Dallas. Fifteen people in total were shot.

Thursday’s funeral took place at the Watermark Church in Dallas.

The family held a private service for Smith on Wednesday. His sister gave an emotional eulogy, saying the legacy of the 25-year veteran of DPD “will live on.”

"He would tell me to pray. Use that brain in that head of yours and listen to your heart," she said. "My brother's murder will not be in vain, and his selfless legacy will live on, and he would want us to continue the fight."

Friends told News 8 Smith was a doting father to his two daughters, was an Army Ranger and a man devoted to Christ.

After the service, a procession carried Smith to the Restland Cemetery.
