Bates Named to United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-West Region Team

Texas A&M senior midfielder Emily Bates was named to the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division I Women's Scholar All-West Region Second Team, the organization announced Monday.

Texas A&M senior midfielder Emily Bates was named to the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division I Women's Scholar All-West Region Second Team, the organization announced Monday.

Bates, who is slated to graduate this weekend, owns a 3.77 GPA in Psychology. On the field, she earned USC All-Southeast Region recognition at the end of November.

The Melissa, Texas, native played in 21 matches in 2018, including 20 starts. She finished the season with four goals, including one game-winner.

Bates finished her career with 78 Aggie caps, including 73 starts. She compiled 53 points on 20 goals and 13 assists. She earned SEC All-Freshman in 2015 and was named to the SEC Championship All-Tournament Team in 2015 and 2017. She scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute of the SEC Tournament championship match against Arkansas in 2017.

The Aggies have had seven players earn USC Scholar All-Region region since 2014, including Janae Cousineau, Leigh Edwards, Shea Groom, Annie Kunz, Stephanie Malherbe and Meghan Streight.

Earlier this year, senior midfielder Kate Hajdu was named to the Google Cloud Division I Women’s Soccer Academic All-District 7 Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America in the other nationally recognized award that honors combined athletic and academic endeavors.

Texas A&M finished the 2018 campaign with a 17-5-1 record. The Aggies earned their 24th consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the 15th time.

To be eligible for selection to the USC Scholar All-Region teams, a student-athlete must meet the following criteria: have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout her career, start more than 50 percent of all games and be an elite player as supported by playing honors (i.e., all-conference) or contributions to the success of his/her team, and be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution.
