BRYAN, Texas — Kathleen Menchaca, a second-grade teacher at Jones Elementary in Bryan Independent School District has been named the Texas Teachers of Tomorrow 2019 Texas Teacher of the Year.
There were over 150 submissions for the contest this year. Menchaca was one of six finalists before being presented the award Friday afternoon.
"She has a passion for education," said Jonathan Schneider, Director of Business Development. "She has a heart for education and a heart for children."
She has been teaching at Anson-Jones for one year, but before teaching she was the school's secretary for over 10 years.
Menchaca said that she was over-whelmed with emotion when she found out she won.
"I've been working these past couple of months to be the best teacher I can be," she said. "It is nice to see that someone recognized it and I feel very appreciated right now."
Menchaca was also awarded a grand prize of $5,000.
