Celebrity hairstylist calls to embrace the gray during COVID-19

Christopher Michael Stribling started a campaign called #ShowMeYourGray to urge people not to visit hairstylists and continue to social distance.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — It has been a few weeks since barbershops and salons had to close down because of the shelter-in-place because they're named deemed essential businesses. Many people and their hair are feeling those effects.

"Any hands-on contact industry has come to a big halt," said Christopher Michael Stribling, a celebrity hairstylist working in the Bryan/College Station area. "I mean you don't want to go get your hair done by somebody right now."

Stribling said because of how hands-on his industry is, no one should be operating during the outbreak.

"There are so many people that are rallying to have the salon industry back open and back up, but we all need to hold up, take a step back and observe everything that going on," Stribling said.

Stribling said as much as he needs to work, he knows the importance of social distancing.

"All it takes is the salon to reopen and one person to trigger a whole new outbreak," Stribling said.

Stribling wants to people to participate in an online campaign called #ShowMeYourGray. People are encouraged to post pictures online of their hair not colored.

"Instead of making it feel like its a negative thing, let's turn that into a positive thing and be proud of your gray because that means your staying home," Stribling said.

When salons and barbershops do start to reopen, people should be aware of what each business is doing to keep their customers safe.

"Demand to know that they're sanitizing, demand to know that they're tools are clean, demand to know that you have a fresh cape," Stribling said.

People should also look for a place that is not in an open environment and does not have you seated close to others.

"If you're going to be sitting next to somebody just four or five feet away would you feel safe?" Stribling said.
