BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas -- In 2017 alone, over 950 investigations into child abuse and neglect were investigated here in Brazos County.

That’s about 18 cases per every 1,000 kids.

Brazos County, along with 30 other counties, fall in the Austin region. In that region, Brazos County ranks sixth for the highest number of cases reported.

Cases ranged from emotional abuse, physical abuse, neglectful supervision and sexual abuse.

Out of the cases confirmed, neglectful supervision had the highest number of confirmed cases – with over 230 cases confirmed.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services said all reports of abuse and neglect are assessed and then screened to see if enough information is present. They also check to see if the legal definitions of abuse are met.

As for Texas, Texas is a mandatory reporting state, meaning that by Texas law, anyone who thinks a child, a person older than 65, or an adult with a disability is being abused, neglected, or exploited, that offense must be reported.
