Red Nose Day 2018 fights child poverty

It is Red Nose Day and that means people across the country are putting on their red noses to help end child poverty.

This year, Walgreens hopes to raise more than $20 million for the 2018 Red Nose Campaign.

Walgreens stores across the nation will sell red noses through June 2 to end child poverty. The Red Nose campaign encourages people to buy their sparkly red noses, snap selfies and promote the cause by sharing them on social media.

The British charity Comic Relief started Red Nose Day in the United Kingdom in 1988 to raise money to fight child poverty. Walgreens became the official retailer when the campaign began in the United States in 2015.

The charity works with nonprofit organizations like Feeding America, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and Save the Children to distribute food, medicine, vaccines and other essentials to children in need.

Red Nose Day has raised more than $1 billion since its inception 25 years ago, according to the campaign website.

“Red Nose Day is a movement that everyone can get behind,” said Jennifer Zimmerman, a Walgreens store manager in Bryan, Texas. “Its mission is to lift children out of poverty while having fun.”

15 million America children live in poverty and once in six American children are food insecure, according to the campaign website.

People in the Bryan-College Station area can join in on the “fun-raising” today, Thursday, May 24, at Walgreens, located on 610 E Villa Maria Rd, which will host Red Nose Community Day from 3 pm to 6 pm. JJ’s Snowcones will be selling snowcones and the Bryan Fire Department will make a guest appearance.
