Texas A&M couple overcoming obstacles ahead of graduation

Hillary and Scott Oswald are graduating from Texas A&M - A special day for both of them. And a special celebration of all they have overcome to get there.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Hillary and Scott Oswald met in elementary school.

"We really didn't like each other much in elementary school," Hillary said.

But, that didn't stop Scott from continuing to pursue Hillary.

"I was able to woo her over junior year," he said. "Honors accounting with Ms. Fisher."

They began dating and from there, the story wrote itself.

Hillary began school at Texas A&M; Scott at Blinn. Shortly after, he transferred to A&M and the couple was able to continue to spend time together.

In December of 2017, Hillary and Scott tied the knot.

"A complete 180 from elementary school," Scott said.

This weekend the two will walk across the stage to receive their diplomas and become alumni.

But, their journey wasn't easy.

"So basically my retina is slowly deteriorating," Hillary said.

Hillary has retinitis pigmentosa - a rare eye condition that will lead to blindness. She was diagnosed in middle school when she first started experiencing "night blindness."

But, it wasn't until college when she started to experience problems.

"I was tripping around campus," Hillary said. "I was really on my own for the first time."

Even with Scott by her side, he couldn't be there 24/7. So, Hillary applied for a guide dog. But at first, she was denied.

"In order to get a guide dog, I had to be able to get around myself with a cane," she said.

With an end goal in mind, Hillary grabbed a cane and a blindfold and trained herself to get around completely on her own. And after that process she was able to receive Ileka, her guide dog.

Even though she's been limited, she's never let her condition define her.

"It may be a disability, but it is also a way to show people that I can do everyday tasks," Hillary said. "I may just do them differently than someone who may have perfect vision."

And with that mindset, she and Scott are learning to appreciate the bigger picture.

"At the end of the day, you got to put your trust in the Lord," Scott said. "It's hard, but we can get through it because we are a team."
