HUNTSVILLE, Texas—An animal shelter in the backyard of Sam Houston State University has been saving animals since the 1980’s.
And, it’s all thanks to a former professor who dedicated her life to caring for stray animals.
The Rita B. Huff Humane Society is named after an instructor and former department chair at Sam Houston State University.
“She gave all of her life savings to the shelter to keep it a non-profit organization and keep it going for as long as possible,” said Chris Slott, a Kennel Technician at the facility.
“We love Rita,” he added.
Slott has worked at Rita B. Huff for about a year, and he’s proud that they are a no-kill shelter.
“We do a lot for the animals in this community,” said Slott.

“He’s extremely playful, and one of the most well-trained dogs we have at Rita B.,” said Slott.
The two-year-old Pit Bull mix is a bundle of energy.
Everyone at the shelter knows Hogg well. He’s been at Rita B. Huff for almost two years.
Slott said he was abandoned as a puppy, thrown out of the car, breaking his leg.
He said that Hogg needs to be in a home with no other dogs, and plenty of room to run and play.
“He just really needs a family to go to,” said Slott.
While Hogg is waiting for his forever home, he and all the animals at Rita B. Huff will be cared for, thanks to the woman who simply loved animals.
Huff’s legacy lives on every day with every success story.
“That’s our goal when the animals come in. They’re terrified and we work with them over the course of a week, and they’re already a brand-new animal,” said Slott.
“We love to get them adopted out and find homes for them,” he added.
