COLLEGE STATION, Texas —
EDITOR'S NOTE: KAGS TV is working to independently confirm Patricia Hernandez Mazariegos' account of her mother's story. We have reached out to the Houston Police Department and are waiting for more information.
Here's what we know so far. Patricia Hernandez Mazariegos said she started a GoFundMe page after her mother, Yuri Velasquez, was taken into ICE custody after a minor traffic accident last week.
However, KAGS has found court documents filed in Harris Co. District Court that state Velasquez was arrested by the Houston Police Department on July 11 on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Later that day, court records show an immigration hold was placed on Velasquez and she is currently in ICE custody in Houston.
Her next court date is scheduled for October 22.
Below is our original story that was posted Friday, July 19.
Yuri Velasquez is a single mother with no prior criminal background, was detained by ICE in Houston after a minor traffic accident this week, daughter Patricia Hernandez Mazariegos said.
Velasquez left behind her 9-year old son and 19-year old daughter Mazariegos, who said she now has to drop out of Texas A&M University to care for her younger brother and fight to have her mother released from ICE custody.
Mazariegos launched a GoFundMe to pay for her mother’s legal fees, and within five days, it reached over $10,000 of its $15,000 goal.
The Young Democrats of Bryan/College Station offered their help to Mazariegos and her mother.
“No one should have to deal with this much responsibility, stress, and trauma at just 19 years old,” Stephanie Koithan, President of Young Dems BCS, said in a press release. “The least we can do is contribute and make things a little easier for her.”
Mazariegos said on her GoFundMe page that anything helps, and she would even appreciate legal advice anyone could offer her.
