For public schools across the Lone Star state, today is the third day schools can hold workouts together in person, but on the private school level, or TAPPS, they’ve been working out since last Monday and here at Allen Academy, coach Adrian Adams says the improvement from now to then is night and day.
"It’s a process to get them back in shape," coach Adams says. "We’re turning into that Brazos Valley 100 degree heat. It was a shock to them, but they’re used to it now."
"I'm loving what I’m seeing out here," senior wide receiver Aaron Boegner says. "People coming back doing great, freshman showing up. I think it’ll be the best season we’ve seen in a while, especially with the underclassmen working like seniors."
To be better than last season, the Rams need to reach the Tapps DII State Championship game, something the seniors are confident can happen if they continue to grind every day.
"We were confident last year, had a good team but we still have a good team," senior defensive back Elias Chapa says. "We’re hungry, we’re angry, and working hard every day with a different attitude."
Coach Adams knows it's going to be a long summer before any game action, so he's easing his team into the swing of things. That includes keeping all footballs on the sidelines until at least the third week of workouts.
"We got to work in a new quarterback so if we put a ball in his hands, he can’t slow things down and we want to make sure everyone is on the same page," coach Adams says. "We have the whole summer to have a spring football so we can take out time, build it up week by week and when we get to the last week, we should have everything installed."
