COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Blinn College women’s basketball team used a strong defense (15-4, 4-3) to defeat Jacksonville College, 75-60, on Saturday afternoon in the Kruse Center.

“I was really impressed with Jacksonville, and this was the first game all season that our defense won the game for us,” said Jeff Jenkins, Blinn head coach. “In the second half we made it really hard for them to score and it was definitely our defense who kept us in the game. We have 16 really good players who compete every day in practice and games and this is one of the best teams we have had in a long time.”

Kristine Ezimako scored a team-high 21 points, Hailey Atwood followed with 16, while Gabriela Bosquez and Mia Cherry each chipped in 10 points.

“Defense was really important for us to win this game,” Atwood said. “We got some really good stops coming out of the half and really kept fighting until we won the game. We are very talented and everyone has their own skill set that they bring to the court that all comes together.”

The Buccaneers opened the game with a 22-16 lead in the first quarter before Jacksonville fought back to hold a 40-38 advantage at the half.

Cherry scored the first four points for Blinn and Bosquez scored five straight points for the Buccaneers to lead 15-10.  Atwood led Blinn on a 7-2 run with five points for the Buccaneers to conclude the opening quarter ahead by six points.

In the second quarter, Ezimako scored seven points to help Blinn take an 11-point lead (31-20) at the 7:29 mark. Spencer kept the Buccaneers ahead 36-27 with a 3-pointer, but Jacksonville came back on a 13-2 run in the final three minutes to grab a 2-point lead at the half.

Coming out of the half, the Buccaneers went on a 6-0 run to take back a 46-45 lead. Ezimako scored Blinn’s final five points of the third quarter for Blinn to lead 57-54.

In the final quarter, the Buccaneers scored 18 points, while limiting Jacksonville to six. Ezimako led Blinn on a 6-0 run with five points to begin the final quarter. Atwood scored four points in a 6-0 run for Blinn to lead 73-57. Deja Adrian scored Blinn’s final two points for a 15-point win.
