BRENHAM, Texas — Men:

Blinn College men’s basketball (21-9, 8-9) ended the regular season on a high note after defeating Coastal Bend College, 78-58, Saturday in the Kruse Center.

“In the second half, we kept grinding and were eventually able to pull away from a very good Coastal Bend team,” said Scott Schumacher, Blinn head coach. “Sophomores Kai Tease and JaQuan Morris have played very well for us all year long and will be missed. It was also a pleasure to coach redshirt freshmen Matt Adams, Garrett Savant and Will Simpson who will graduate this year.”

Tease and Morris led Blinn’s offense in the regular season with 449 and 451 points, respectively. They combined for 36 points in today’s win as Tease led the team with 20 and Morris scored 16.

AJ Rainey also recorded 19 points, while Tristan Ikpe recorded 11.

After falling behind 33-30 at the half, the Buccaneers held Coastal Bend to 25 points in the second half. Blinn’s offense came alive in the final half, scoring 48 points, for a 20-point victory.

Next, Blinn will compete in the Region XIV Tournament, starting Tuesday, March 5, in Shreveport, La.

Women:

Sophomores led Blinn College women’s basketball to a 94-78 win over Paris Junior College Saturday afternoon in the Kruse Center.

With the win, the Buccaneers finish the season with a 12-18 overall record and 5-13 conference record.

“I am very proud of this team and our sophomores for competing every day in practice and in our games,” said Jeff Jenkins, Blinn head coach. “I can’t say enough about the three sophomores and what they have done for this program. They will always be very special to me and they deserved to have this kind of win.”

Sophomores Alexus Wykoff, Missy Archie, and Alexus Brigham led Blinn in points for the win. Wykoff recorded a season-high 36 points, while Archie followed with 21 and Brigham scored 15. Freshman Kristine Ezimako tallied 14 points in the win.

“It feels great that we came together to win our last home game and now are headed to the Region XIV Tournament,” Wykoff said. “We connected more during this game and now see what we are capable of. We were all hyped for our last game playing together at home.”

Wykoff opened the game strong, scoring 10 points in the opening quarter for Blinn to gain a 25-14 lead. The Buccaneers kept the momentum rolling through the second quarter with a 10-1 run, led by Wykoff and Mariel Wade with back-to-back three-pointers. Brigham made a shot from downtown to conclude the first half and for Blinn to lead 49-32 at the break.

Wykoff tallied the first eight points for Blinn in the third quarter for the Buccaneers to lead 57-38 at the 6:04 mark. Paris ended the quarter with a 9-3 run, but Blinn still held an 11-point lead (70-59) heading into the final period. Archie jumped in with the first eight points for the Buccaneers in the fourth quarter. Paris gained momentum late with a 6-0 run with less than 3:00 on the clock, but it wasn’t enough for a comeback.

Next, Blinn will compete in the Region XIV Tournament, starting Wednesday, March 6, in Shreveport, La.
