Five Aggies produce career best throws in UTSA Roadrunner Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — A handful of career best performances highlighted Texas A&M’s day during throwing events held at the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational on Friday. Aggie freshman Natalie Scheifele was the top A&M finisher as runner-up in the javelin.

 

A total of five Aggie throwers had personal best marks during Friday’s session, which featured three throwing disciplines – shot put, hammer and javelin.

 

Scheifele’s opening javelin throw measured 151-8 (46.22) and bettered her debut performance of 141-2 (43.03) from last week’s meet. Scheifele, who went to high school at St. Mary’s Hall in San Antonio, finished second to the winning mark of 162-5 (49.50) by Oklahoma’s Gabrielle Kearney.

 

Jenna Ellis and Celine Markert also set career best javelin marks in placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Ellis opened with a distance of 145-11 (44.48) as her top mark as did Markert with a 135-2 (41.21) effort in the opening round.

 

A career best throw of 173-7 (52.92) placed KJ Grimes fourth among collegians in the hammer and seventh overall. An improvement of 11 feet, five inches over his previous best from last week moved Grimes to No. 7 on the Aggie all-time list. Josh Brown, who was previously at the No. 7 position, finished 11th with a mark of 161-6 (49.23).

 

Austin Riddle won the hammer event with a toss of 214-0 (65.24) while Oklahoma’s Edward Jeans finished as the top collegian in third place with an effort of 209-6 (63.87).

 

Markert also placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 47-6 ½ (14.49) while Parker Clay finished ninth with a mark of 46-0 ½ (14.03). Heptathlete Tyra Gittens added over a foot to her career best in the shot put with a throw of 43-2 ½ (13.17) in placing 11th.

 

In the men’s shot put Gabe Oladipo placed seventh with his opening throw of 52-4 ½ (15.96). Decathlete Nathan Hite placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 167-3 (50.99) and finished 11th in the shot put with a mark of 47-2 ½ (14.39).

Action in the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational continues on Saturday with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and track events starting at 2 p.m.
