Blinn thumps Lamar State-Port Arthur, 87-82

BRENHAM, Texas — Despite falling behind in the first half, Blinn College men’s basketball (15-5, 4-5) rallied for 49 points down the stretch to defeat the Region XIV South Division leader, Lamar State College-Port Arthur, 87-82, Wednesday night on the road.

“I could not be more proud and happy for our guys for hanging in there and doing what we asked them to do after halftime in order to come up with the win,” said Scott Schumacher, Blinn head coach. “I have tremendous respect for Lamar State-Port Arthur, Coach Lance Madison and his program. For us to go on the road and get a win of this magnitude is big."

Lamar State-Port Arthur entered the matchup leading the Region XIV South Division, but with the loss, the Seahawks are tied for first with Jacksonville College.  With the win, Blinn moves up to third place in conference.

JaQuan Morris recorded a game-high 26 points, while AJ Rainey followed with 18. Kai Tease and Uriel Velis each chipped in 11. Tristan Ikpe led Blinn’s defense with 11 rebounds, while Velis recorded nine.

Lamar State-Port Arthur built an early lead in the first quarter to pull ahead of Blinn 50-38 at the half.

Blinn’s offense exploded in the second half, led by Morris with 17 points and Rainey with 13. The Buccaneers outscored Lamar State-Port Arthur by 17 points (49-32) in the final half for the win.

Blinn returns home to take on Jacksonville  on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m. in the Kruse Center.
