HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Sam Houston State Bearkat Volleyball head coach Brenda Gray unveiled a challenging 2019 slate on Friday, complete with 11 games to be played at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Season tickets for the 2019 season are currently on sale for $30 and can be purchased by calling the Bearkat Ticket office at 936-294-1729, or online by visiting HERE.
Gray’s Bearkats are coming off a 22-8 season in 2018, finishing third in the Southland Conference with a 13-3 record. They return eight players off of that squad, including six who played significant time in that 2018 campaign.
The entirety of the Kats’ non-conference schedule will come in the first four weekends of the year when they take part in four tournaments, including opening up the year at home with the 42nd Annual SHSU Invitational on August 30-31.
The Kats will kick off the season on Friday, August 30 against Louisiana Tech before taking on both Prairie View and Oral Roberts on Saturday in the round-robin format tournament.
They then will head west to Provo, Utah, to take part in the BYU Invitational, hosted by the Cougars who held the No. 1 ranking in the country for the majority of the 2018 season on their way to an appearance in the Final Four.
The tournament will take place September 5-7 at Smith Fieldhouse and kicks off with the Kats taking on Weber State on Thursday in the tournament opener before battling BYU on Friday night. SHSU will close out the weekend on Saturday, September 7 against LIU Brooklyn.
A week later they head to Jacksonville, Ala., for a two-day tournament at Jacksonville State that will pit the Kats against the Gamecocks, Stetson and Mississippi State. The Kats then close out the non-conference portion of the schedule a week later in San Marcos as part of the Creeds & Crest Classic at Texas State on Sept. 20-21 where they will take on George Washington, UTSA and Texas State.
Southland Conference play begins on the road for the Bearkats on September 26 with a road swing at Northwestern State and Central Arkansas before its first home game in SLC play on Oct. 3 against New Orleans.
Other home games in Southland play include Southeastern Louisiana (Oct. 5), Houston Baptist (Oct. 10), Lamar (Oct. 12) and McNeese (Oct. 24) with the final home weekend set for November 7 vs Northwestern State and November 9 vs Central Arkansas.
Road games include a weekend swing to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Oct. 17) and Incarnate Word (Oct. 19), along with a match at Stephen F. Austin on Halloween night, followed by a trip to Abilene Christian on November 2. A trip to New Orleans (Nov. 14) and Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 16) will close out the regular season, leading into the Southland Conference Tournament which will be held in Conway, Ark., beginning on November 22.
