Texas A&M women’s tennis opened its home schedule with a double header sweep against UTSA and Houston at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas on Saturday. The Aggies have swept each of their four matches this season.

“It’s great to be sitting at 4-0 right now in the season,” Texas A&M women’s tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. “Playing at home for the first time this season was great. It was nice to get these matches in considering the difficult conditions we had today. Winning the double header in such a convincing way was nice. I couldn’t be more pleased with the effort from the team today, we knew today was going to be a challenging day. UTSA and Houston are a couple of really tough opponents and the weather was about as difficult as we are going to face all year. Our challenge to the team was how we were going to handle the conditions and how tough can we be on the court. I couldn’t be happier with the fight and determination of all of them.”

The Maroon & White opened each match with convincing doubles victories. Against the Roadrunners, Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova were the first off the court with an impressive 6-0 win followed by a 6-2 triumph by Katya Townsend and Lucia Quitero to clinch the point. Riley McQuaid and Dorthea Faa-Hviding posted a 6-1 victory to open the Houston match followed by Goldsmith and Makarova’s clinching 6-3 win.

No. 110 Goldsmith was the first to claim a win against UTSA in singles action, the freshman posted a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Mariah Plauth on court two. Townsend finished moments later on court one, besting Jasmin Starr 6-1, 6-0. Quitero clinched the day’s first team win with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court five over Charleen Tiwari. Faa-Hviding, McQuaid and Makarova followed with straight set wins to round out the 7-0 win.

Following a brief intermission the Aggies wrapped up the doubles point against Houston before taking charge in singles action. The Maroon & White picked up the first set on each court, only relinquishing one set on the day. Quitero wasted little time to double the A&M advantage, winning 6-1, 6-0 on court six against Stephanie Belovukovic. Shortly after Quitero’s victory, Townsend inched the Aggies ahead 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court two against Mimi Kendall-Woseley. Mcquaid picked up the clinching point for the home team, topping Elena Tairyan 6-1, 6-3 on court five. Renee McBryde, Goldsmith and Makarova rounded out the singles wins for A&M.

“I don't really like to single out one person for having a great day, but Lucia was really impressive,” Weaver added. “She has only been on the team for about a week and she only dropped a couple games today. She is just starting college classes for the first time and she won both matches very decisively. That is a really encouraging start to the year for her, it is really tough for student-athletes to start in January and jump straight into the dual match season. She is playing at a really high level right off the bat, but the whole team played excellent today. We only dropped one set on the day in difficult conditions and that is a good sign for where we are at.”

The Aggies will have a break from matches for the next 12 days, returning to action at the Mitchell Tennis Center against UNLV and Lamar on February 1 at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
