Images capture damage left behind across Houston area after destructive storms

It was a rude awakening overnight with strong winds and loud thunder. Several areas reported wind gusts over 50 mph, with College Station seeing 85 mph wind gusts.

HOUSTON — It was a sleepless night across the Houston area for many of us as severe storms and destructive winds worked their way through early Sunday morning.

More than 60,000 CenterPoint Energy customers were without power at one point after the strong storms cleared out.

KHOU 11 photojournalist Nathan Kvinge captured images of an uprooted tree, a trampoline stuck in power lines, and heavy damage to the exterior of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in the Third Ward.

Wind gusts were a big concern, with a sensor in College Station reporting a gust of 85 mph at one point. There was also a wind gust of 62 mph at Bush Airport and 53 mph in Sugar Land, according to the National Weather Service.
