New Art Mural Festival aims to uplift artists and local businesses

The first-ever mural festival brought artists near and far together, and can make a perfect backdrop for a social media post.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Brazos Valley Arts Council brought some color to College Station this past week with their new mural festival.

The festival has attracted talent from near and fall, and the artists that did participate hope their works leave a lasting impact. Among the artists include Naomi Haverland, a Floridian muralist who made the long journey to Texas to participate in this event.

“I saw a call for this festival it looked like a really cool opportunity to be in the first year, so I went ahead and applied and didn’t know the competition was really tough, they had 175 applicants--that was crazy--but I was really excited I got in” Haverland said.

The idea for this came from a local restaurant’s success with their own mural.

Sheree Boegner, the Brazos Valley Arts Council Executive Director, explained their inspiration behind the event, saying "People would come in try his food, fall in love, take pictures by his mural and I really saw how a simple, simple, little piece made an impact on the business and the community.”

Haverland hopes to bring some entertainment to commuters with her art on University Flowers, which she worked on for 10 hours each day.

“Every time, I see a huge wall and think of transforming it the final product is just this exhilarating high to see the wall get transformed to something that will make an impact from far away,” Haverland said.

The works of the artists that took part in the interactive festival are scattered around College Station, with different talents bringing something new to their areas that they showed off their talents in.

In fact, the murals are still up and available for the public to take pictures with. For more information on their locations you can visit the Arts Council of the Brazos Valley website here.
