'I thought it was a joke' | North Texas woman's scratcher ticket won her a chance to explore space

Kacey Wenk had a Texas Lottery losing ticket, but a Second-Chance Drawing is offering a chance to travel to the edge of space.

WEATHERFORD, Texas — Kacey Wenk has a fun addiction.

The 48-year-old Weatherford woman frequents the same gas station for Texas Lottery scratch tickets and purchases tickets from the same cashiers.

“It’s definitely a good fun addiction,” Wenk said.

She has won a $1,000 and a $5,000 prize on scratch tickets in the past, but her most recent win is unique.

Back in February, Wenk had a losing Cash Blast scratch ticket. She scanned her ticket and played in the Second-Chance Drawing.

Then, an unexpected letter came in the mail.

It was an official final notice in the mail from the Texas Lottery notifying her that her scratch ticket was selected for the $1 million Cash Blast Space Perspective drawing.

Not only would she and a guest have the opportunity to travel to Florida on an all-expense paid trip in 2025, every day she’ll have an opportunity to earn cash prizes.

On the third day, finalists will have the opportunity to visit the Kennedy Space Center, and meet astronauts, and four lucky winners will have the opportunity to travel to the edge of space.

“I thought it was a joke,” Wenk said. “I didn’t even know this was part of the prize.”

She called the lottery commission and verified that it was verified and legitimate. When she learned it was indeed legitimate, she realized she had a chance at a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“I got a little weak in the knees,” Wenk said.

Wenk told WFAA she dreamed of space travel as a little girl. One of her favorite movies, Space Camp, inspired her to one day travel to space.

She never imagined she would have a shot at making it come true.

“I’m really excited about this, and to top it off, the day they do this is actually my wedding anniversary,” Wenk said.

Wenk, a grandmother, plans to travel with her husband. If they win the trip to space, they’ll celebrate their 23rd wedding anniversary 100,000 feet in the air. They’ll also have a chance to win up to $1 million. It’s all part of the Texas Lottery’s new scratch game promotion.

“Even though it’s a losing ticket, I’m still a winner,” Wenk said.
