BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas — According to the United Way Brazos Valley’s end-of-the-year statistics, they’ve helped 2,950 residents achieve access to healthcare and have helped 346 women gain access to prenatal care.
“Throughout the year we raise money and every two years we go through a grant process so right now we’re giving $350,000 across 28 different nonprofits serving the people here in the Brazos Valley,” explained Vice President of Community Impact, Kat Gammon.
United Way has created several programs to help combat these gaps in communities and is looking to expand to make life easier for residents.
“Here at United Way one of our programs is called Ride2Health. So we partner with a number of clinics in the area to help give people who don’t have access to transportation rides to their medical appointments so they can stay on top of their chronic illnesses so that they can get to those rehabilitation appointments,” Gammon described.
This organization wants to build a sense of community between patients and the non-profits that help them.
“I’ve had the privilege of driving one of our clients to their healthcare appointment and there was one gentleman last year that I picked up and I took him on a ride I think he was in my car for maybe five minutes and then maybe three or six months later. I gave the same gentlemen a ride and he remembered me and he was like oh I remember you I’m so thankful for that ride,” Gammon said.
