Members of the Brazos County District 2 Volunteer Fire Department have voted to discontinue hosting their annual Fourth of July Fireworks show in Kurten, according to a press release from the organization.
The group says that there were a number of factors that led them to come to the decision to discontinue the annual celebration, including the amount of hands needed to make the event happen, the rising costs of fireworks, and how their regular duties have changed with Brazos County Emergency Services District #2 taking over most of the operating costs in regards to the department's regular duties.
The announcement doesn't mean the show has to come to an end, however. The District 2 VFD says they are willing to assist with transitioning the event to another non-profit organization.
"District 2 VFD is extremely grateful to the volunteers and sponsors who have helped over the past 20 years," the VFD said in a press release. "We look forward to helping another organization continue the event by serving in a response and fire protection role. This is central to our purpose of saving lives and protecting property endangered by fires and other disasters."
Those who are interested in hosting the event are advised to reach out to Vice President Travis Rollins at trollins@district2vfd.org.
