Coronavirus Effect: Walmart, H-E-B adjust closing times in the Brazos Valley

Many of the stores are usually open 24 hours, however, company officials said they want to close overnight to allow for restocking and deep cleaning.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — If you are a shopper that enjoys hitting up stores like Walmart or H-E-B in the late evening or early morning, you'll be out of luck starting Sunday. Two of the biggest retailers in the Brazos Valley have announced they are closing overnight to allow its stores to be deep-cleaned and the shelves to be restocked.

Shelves at the Walmarts in Bryan-College Station and in the surrounding communities have been left bare when it comes to essentials like toilet paper, facial tissue, hand sanitizer and hand soap. Many shoppers have been out of luck too at H-E-B. People have been stockpiling supplies since the spread of the coronavirus hit the United States back in January.

However, Gov. Abbott, who addressed the state Friday, urged Texans to slow down and not to panic. “There is absolutely no need to go out and stockpile supplies. There will be plenty available. We are gonna make it through this. We’ve been through situations like this before and we’ll make it through this as well.”

Walmart announced it will start closing its doors at 11 p.m. and reopening at 6 a.m. Stores that already work under reduced hours will keep those hours.

As the coronavirus situation continues to evolve, we know it is top of mind for our customers. We see it in the items people are buying and hear it in the conversations we're having in our stores. So we believe it's important to share the steps we are taking to keep our people safe and our facilities clean.

H-E-B's hours are more restricted. The company issued a message that said its stores will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. starting Sunday until further notice.

When it comes to something like the coronavirus, it's important to stay informed with the right information. On Saturday, an overseas shipment of so-called coronavirus tests were discovered in Los Angeles. The testing kits are fake. There is no at home test that can diagnose you with coronavirus.
