LUDOWICI, Ga.- Federal authorities say a deputy U.S. marshal has been fatally shot while trying to serve an arrest warrant in southeast Georgia.
A news release from the U.S. Marshals Service says the suspect was killed by officers who returned fire. The release says the deputy marshal, 53-year-old Patrick Carothers, was shot twice while trying to serve a warrant at a mobile home in rural Long County.
The suspect was killed by federal officers who returned fire.
According to a news release, Carothers was part of a team executing a warrant for Dontrell Montrese Carter. He was wanted for attempted murder of police officers, domestic violence and unlawfully discharging a weapon in September in Sumter County, S.C.
David Harlow, deputy director of the U.S. Marshal Service, made this statement; “Our deputies and law enforcement partners face dangers every day in the pursuit of justice nationwide. The fugitive who killed Deputy Commander Carothers was extremely dangerous, wanted for trying to kill law enforcement officers and deliberately evading authorities. Pat is a hero and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and five children.”
Long County is located about 55 miles southwest of Savannah and 50 miles northwest of Brunswick.
