Multiple agencies respond to large structure fire in Kurten

Authorities say it could take days before the fire is fully contained.

KURTEN, Texas — Multiple agencies are responding to a fire at Feather Crest Farms on Highway 21 near Kurten. Some county officials say it could take days before the fire is fully contained.

The small town is 15 minutes away from Bryan.

Reports say the fire is contained between two buildings and tanks, located east of Kurten near Fickey Road. Black plumes of smoke could be seen as far away as Limestone County.

The fire initially caused area residents outages as Bryan Texas Utilities put "140 customers out of service so firefighters can safely respond to a fire."

Power was restored around 7:25 p.m.

Firefighters from Brazos, Robertson, and Madison counites are assisting aid and having to shuttle water from other areas resulting in low water pressure for some Kurten residents.

In a press conference Monday evening, Brazos County Sheriff Wayne Dicky said that Democrat Road is closed and all lanes of Highway 21 are back open, but urges people to stay away from the area and not stop on the side of the road to take photos.

Authorities say the fire is within a metal building -- too dangerous to send firefighters into the structure. They also included that the calm winds are helping with extinguishing the fire.

There is no public threat connected to the fire, authorities say.

KAGS reached out to a spokesperson and received the following from Chief Executive Officer Sam Krouse Tuesday:

"Monday evening a fire occurred at Feather Crest farm in Kurten, Texas. The fire affected two chicken houses on site, and we are very sad to say one house had chickens in it at the time that have been lost. We are thankful for the swift actions of our entire team and that they are all safe. We also deeply appreciate the first responders who reached the farm quickly and helped to prevent any further damage."

No indication on the fire's cause was released. No injuries have yet to be reported.
