NAVASOTA, Texas — This morning the city of Navasota held its annual State of the City event with speakers from the county, city, and school district.
Speakers described their milestones from 2023 and focused on the major growth occurring on all fronts across the city.
“The most attention is on the growth we’ve been seeing that’s anything from aging infrastructure in the community to streets to our school enrollment growing all the way to just more people living in the county and in the city, so we just have to prepare for that and get ahead of it,” Mayor of Navasota, Bert Miller said.
As their population grows, the city has been building its relationship with developers to accommodate new residents and their children.
Currently, Navasota ISD has 3,000 kids in their schools, but the superintendent is prepared to build more over the years.
Dr. Stu Musick, NISD superintendent explained, “One developer that’s going to build 2,000 homes in year one of their 10-year build-out starts this year. Taking a look ahead of when they’re built out, and those homes are sold and occupied, how many students in elementary school, junior high, and high school students can we project, and being able to be prepared for that growth.”
Economically, the city is seeing success from their businesses both big and small, and are looking to employ all newcomers.
“We added over 100 new businesses just in one year alone and that was supported in Navasota and smaller cities across the county itself so statistically the county itself is 31,000 in population Navasota is almost 8,000 of that alone so lots of growth and lots of people coming in but one of the good things about that is we’re adding new employers almost daily,” Lucy Ybarra, Executive Director of Navasota and Grimes County Chamber said.
