GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — Texas DPS Trooper Jimmy Morgan has released a statement on law enforcement activity in Grimes County.

After questions were raised by people who saw DPS troopers and ICE authorities conducting traffic stops on Highway 6 South of Navasota, KAGS News talked with DPS and Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell.

Sheriff Sowell said he was not aware of a joint operation happening between Texas DPS troopers and ICE authorities in his county and the sheriff's office was not involved.

In a statement released to KAGS, DPS spokesperson Trooper Jimmy Morgan did clear up the operation, telling us DPS from time to time will set up enforcement to check commercial and non-commercial vehicles, as well as drivers. If one of those drivers' citizenship is in question, ICE authorities will be called to the scene to take that person into custody.

Trooper Morgan said a previous traffic enforcement operation resulted in a high number of calls to ICE officials, so rather than wait for a response, ICE officials were with DPS today if needed.  Trooper Morgan said this helps people who may be arrested have a shorter detainment period.

The operation was done in both Grimes and Brazos Counties.  We'll update you if any more information comes in on this story.
