VFW Post 4692 to open their doors once more as a warming center for residents this weekend

The post's efforts were aided by a number of non-profits, and they're able and willing to help those in more ways than one who may need a warm place to briefly stay.

BRYAN, Texas — With temperatures already plummeting in the Brazos Valley, a few places a gearing up to open their doors for those in need of a little warmth this weekend.

A coalition of non-profits and organizations came together to operate a warming center at VFW Post 4692, located off of Harvey Mitchell Parkway in Bryan.

“People think 'oh it’s the VFW we help veterans' yes we do but we’re here to do a lot of community service, but we want to open the doors to people that need us anytime someone needs help we’re here to help,” said VFW Post 4692 Vice Commander John Velasquez.

The groups are working to bring supplies together to ensure the community has warm food and blankets if residents find themselves in an emergency in the cold.

Felicia Benford, from the Community Action Coalition of the Brazos Valley, said, “Our emergency preparedness manager saw the weather and what the weather was gonna be like and we had a concern for the community, for people that are unsheltered and also people that have homes that are not well insulated that have no heat, there’s just a big need for them to have somewhere to go when this cold weather hits.”

The VFW has been a warming center for the past few years and they're prepared to open their doors once more to anyone looking to escape the cold.

“Please call the VFW post and let us know (if you need assistance), we are going to try our very best to provide transportation for those individuals elderly with children that don’t have transportation we wanna make sure everyone is safe and warm during this spell,” Benford added.
