What would you do if you won the $1 billion Powerball Jackpot? Central Texans share their thoughts

Central Texans react to the Powerball jackpot and consider what they'd do with the cash.

TEMPLE, Texas — The jackpot just keeps getting bigger, and with no one winning Monday night's Powerball drawing, that just means the jackpot has grown once again.

The Powerball jackpot is now an estimated $1.09 billion. It's been growing for months since the last winner on New Year's Day.

The next drawing is Wednesday, April 3.

Over the years, the jackpots have gotten bigger and the odds of winning have gotten smaller. 6 News Anchor Lindsay Liepman visited a couple of Central Texas convienence stores to ask people what they would do if they won the lottery.

"To be honest with you, I'd be scared to hit it. I'd be scared. I wouldn't know what to do," said Lonnie Harvey of Temple.

Others already have a plan.

"I'd be traveling. I would get my mama right, I'd get my son right, my family right and I'd travel," said Temple resident Davon Williams.

It takes a lot of luck these days. In October 2015, Powerball made a move to lengthen the odds. Chances are now one in 292 million as opposed to the former one in 175.2 million.

"Do you play the lottery?" Liepman asked Temple resident Trina Edwards.

"No. I think it's a waste of time and money," Edwards laughed.

Making jackpots less common means ticket revenue keeps building week after week, which attracts more players.

In 2021, Powerball also added a third weekly drawing. Because of this, 9 out of the 10 biggest jackpots of all time have been won in the last five years.

"When I do play... I always win something! You never know. You never know," Williams said.
