Cargo plane makes emergency landing in South Florida after reported engine malfunction

No injuries were reported.

MIAMI — Pilots of a cargo plane had to make an emergency landing late Thursday in South Florida due to an engine malfunction, according to multiple reports.

CBS Miami reports an Atlas Air flight landed safely at Miami International Airport (MIA) after experiencing an engine malfunction not long after takeoff.

The Boeing 747-8 aircraft, according to data from FlightAware, departed from MIA just after 10:30 p.m. with a destination in San Juan, Puerto Rico, only to land about 15 minutes later back at MIA.

Video shared by ONLY in DADE on social media, credited to Instagram user @melableh, appears to show an airplane flying over Miami with sparks trailing behind — and possibly even a fire coming from one of the engines. The aircraft in the video has not been verified at this time as the plane that made the emergency landing.

"The crew followed all standard procedures and safely returned to MIA," Atlas Air reportedly told Reuters, adding the airline would conduct an inspection to find the cause of the engine malfunction.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reportedly told CBS Miami no one was hurt during the flight or emergency landing and no one needed to be taken to the hospital.

This is the latest mishap reported for a Boeing aircraft. Two weeks ago, a door plug on a Boeing 747 Max 9 jetliner blew off midflight over Oregon.

One of two door plugs on an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 blew out shortly after the plane took off from Portland, Oregon, on Jan. 5, leaving a hole in the plane, according to The Associated Press. The cabin lost pressure and was forced to descend rapidly and return to Portland for an emergency landing.

No serious injuries were reported.
