COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Coming into the 2020 season, the expectations for Texas A&M's Asa Lacy could not have been higher.
The southpaw was a unanimous preseason All-American selection and his first four starts lived up to the hype.
"Whether I was playing short or second, whoever was playing short or second, we'd just look at each other after some of his pitches and go way," Texas A&M junior infielder Bryce Blaum says.
Filthy, nasty & dirty are just a couple adjectives used to describe Lacy on the mound. In other words, he was virtually unhittable.
"I've gotten a chance to catch him the last few years and get comfortable catching him," senior catcher Mikey Hoehner says. "It's just dominant man. I've never seen someone so dedicated to his craft.
The Aggies ace struck out 46 batters in 24 innings of work. He allowed just two runs in the process.
"It's incredible. That guy is a generation talent," Blaum says. "I'm going to be his campaign endorser. He should be one-one. He should be the first pick in the draft."
Lacy's teammates aren't the only ones who think he should be the first overall pick. He's D1baseball.com's number two overall prospect, and if he gets taken with a top four pick, he'll be the highest Aggie ever selected in the MLB Draft. Jeff Granger was taken fifth overall in 1993.
