Local flower shop asking for community donations to keep their location

Nan's Blossom Shop is at risk of losing its 75-year-old building if the new owners cannot purchase the property and are now asking the community for help.

BRYAN, Texas — Nan's Blossom Shop has been on Texas Avenue in Bryan for 75 years, creating flower arrangements for generations of families in Bryan.

Now, they are at risk of losing that history.

“It definitely started in high school, said Paul Peterson, owner of Nan's Blossom Shop. "I took a floral class for it in high school and just wanted to own a flower shop someday.”

That dream came true for Peterson in 2020 when he and his husband bought the shop from the previous owner, but now they are facing a financial crisis.

“A month and a half ago, they were wanting to sell the property, and at that time they wanted the full amount upfront, and that wasn’t feasible," explained Peterson. "Then, they came back with owner finance, and to come up with that amount of money in a short amount of time, that’s where we’re like, 'that’s a lot.'”

As a small business--and new owners--they have not been able to generate the amount of money needed to cover the down payment for the property.

The couple has until December to raise $40,000 to keep their small business a float in its original location.

“The location is key because the community, people know us here, especially our older clientele. They used to come here for their own prom corsages and mums and things like that back when they were in high school, and I think that’s why its imperative to keep the location and keep the legacy going on for another 75 years,” explained Peterson.
